What shapes the seasons here

The last spring frost in Tallahassee typically comes around Mar 11, but 1 year in 10 it comes after Mar 30. The first fall frost typically arrives around Nov 21. That leaves about 255 frost-free days for tender crops like tomatoes, peppers and squash.

Summer highs average 92°F in July. Lettuce, spinach and cilantro bolt in heat like this, so they're best planted Oct 19–Feb 1.

Tallahassee gets about 59 inches of rain a year, most of it in June, July and August. Crops that rot or get disease in hot, wet weather are timed to miss those months.

162 of the 174 crops in the app grow here; 12 need a different climate (listed near the bottom).

Crops that struggle in Tallahassee

These need a climate Tallahassee doesn't have. Pots, shade cloth or a greenhouse can stretch the rules.

How these dates are worked out

Each crop has temperature limits and timing from university extension guides: how cold a night it can take, how much heat it can stand, how long it takes to mature, and how far before or after the last frost it goes in. Those are checked day by day against the Tallahassee station's NOAA 1991–2020 climate normals (average highs, lows, rain and frost dates). Dates are estimates for a typical year; a sheltered yard, a slope or a cold pocket can shift them by a week or two.
